An LPN, Paramedic or RN is responsible for the evaluation of potential donors for automated pheresis procedures. Administration and supervision of approved immunizations other than red blood cell immunizations. Providing limited emergency care including the administration of any medications or treatments in accordance with licensure or certification, training and SOP guidance. Working knowledge of all areas of operation in the Plasma Center.

Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Determines donor suitability, educates donors regarding the plasma donation process, obtains informed consent from donors, manages donor medical incidents, discloses unsuitable screening test results to donors and manages employee hepatitis B immunization pr! ogram.
Conducts confidential and effective interviews with donors to obtain necessary information. Performs medical histories and screening physical examinations for donors; assesses results of donor screening and laboratory tests to determine initial and continuing donor suitability. Examinations include but are not limited to eyes, ears, nose, throat, neck, abdomen, extremities, and the neurological system. Completes forms and document comments. Explains informed consent materials to donors. This includes explanation of procedures, hazards, and potential adverse events; explanation of immunization schedules, dose and antibody response; providing clear opportunity for donor to refuse participation; obtaining signature and date certifying informed consent.
Handles emergencies at the Plasma Center by providing routine care as outlined in SOPs; contacting Center Physician for further instructions as needed; contacting emergency medical service/local hospital as needed! ; periodically checking emergency medical kit to assure supplies are pr! esent and in-date. Administration of medication within scope of individual licensure.
Reviews test results and determines continued donor suitability. Follows SOP's regarding acceptable ranges of SPE/STS scans; maintains knowledge of and applies all rules regarding four month approvals and grace periods. Assesses signs and symptoms a donor may exhibit that may contraindicate continued donation.
Oversees donor immunization program. Reviews pre- and post-immunization antibody titer results as required. Maintains awareness of appropriate immunization schedule for each antigen. Utilizes and instructs staff in proper technique for administering injections. Maintains awareness of and evaluate any donor reactions that do occur. Refers any donor adverse reactions to Center Physician for determination of further suitability for program. Refers any unusual or non-routine situations to Center Physician for decision.
Notifies donors of unsuitable test results. Provides dono! rs with notification forms. Refers donors to community facilities for follow-up testing and counseling.
Maintains confidentiality with respect to employee, donor, and center records reviewed during the course of all duties. Manages employee hepatitis B immunization program, including administration of immunizations.
Understands and utilizes center computer system (DMS). Maintains current professional licensure or certification and current CPR certification. Maintains work environment in a clean and efficient manner. Follows all HSE and OSHA policies and procedures. May conduct routine audits of internal procedures and documentation. Maintains confidentiality of all personnel, donor and center information. Performs other related center duties, as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:
Graduation from a paramedic, nursing, physician assistant, chiropractic or medical school or training program OR Graduation from a foreign allopathic ! or osteopathic medical school and only if also currently licensed as a ! physician or certified as an emergency medical technician in the state OR prior to the hire date of January 1, 2003, graduation from an emergency medical technician program without graduation from a foreign allopathic or osteopathic medical school is acceptable and with current emergency medical technician (i.e., EMT-Basic or higher) in the state.
Prior to the hire date of January 1, 2003, graduation from an emergency medical technician program is acceptable.
One-year experience in the hospital or field care. Experience in a plasma center environment is a plus.
Current state licensure or certification as paramedic, LPN/LVN, RN, PA, DC, ND, MD or DO. Foreign medical graduates may be accepted with current state certification as an emergency medical technician state licensure or certification as an emergency medical technician (i.e., EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate) is acceptable for an employee hired as a Physician Substitute prior to January 1, 2003, only if the em! ployee keeps up their Physician Substitute skills continuously as described in SOP0161.
Current certification in basic provider cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Ability to make and analyze a physical assessment of heart, lung sounds, signs of drug use, etc. Ability to instruct donors, staff, and community regarding plasma donation program, and teach donors regarding risks and health issues. Ability to utilize necessary equipment such as reflex hammer, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff.
Proficient in English language. Ability to work with many types of people in a positive way. Mathematical ability includes basic mathematical functions.
