The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

Work Schedule: Weekend & Weekday Evenings, Sunday-Saturday, 3:30pm -12 Midnight,with 2 weekdays off for a total of 40 hours worked per week.

GS-3 This is the entry level of the Medical Support Assistant (MSA) positions. The MSA will receive guidance from other more experienced staff members and require frequent and direct supervision.

Scans and index forms into computer system
Greets visitors and takes ! calls and messages
Obtains information from patients
Contacts social work on behalf of the patient
Arranges transportation for transfers with travel office
Informs lead or supervisor with discharge orders
Uses computers and printers
Orders supplies

GS-4 This is the developmental level of the Medical Support Assistant (MSA) positions. The MSA is assigned to the ward and intensive care nursing stations. The incumbent serves in an administrative support capacity in Ward Administration and assists both the veteran and the professional staff in coordinating scheduled procedures and follow-up appointments. Promotes positive image of the Medical Center with emphasis on customer service by treating patients, visitors, co-workers and medical center personnel with courtesy and respect responding to customer's needs in a positive and efficient manner. Duties at the GS-4 level include but are not limited to:
Schedules appointments and follow-ups Orders tests and procedures
Provides release of information
Sc! ans and index forms into computer system
Assists staff concerning VA regulations, policies and procedures on patient care administration
Communicates and coordinates for the inpatient unit, receiving visitors and telephone messages
Responds to questions and requests. Initiates administrative processing of physician orders and refers to nursing staff
Determines eligibility codes
Coordinates with travel office for necessary transportation on transfer or discharge
Schedules appointments and follow-ups
Orders tests and procedures
Provides release of information
Uses computer software and hardware
Orders supplies

GS-5 This is the Full Performance Level of the MSA positions. Duties at the GS 5 level include but are not limited to: Scheduling appointments, including interpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA national scheduling guidelines Enters no-show information; monitoring the electronic wait list Prepares! for clinic visits; monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments for areas of responsibility Ensures encounter forms are completed in order to obtain appropriate workload credit Verifies and updates demographics and insurance information Processes all emergency and non-emergency transfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals; performing basic eligibility, co-pays and pre authorization requirements for specific coverage (i.e. TRICARE, sharing agreements, etc.) Interprets and provides information regarding regulations and policies Prepares special and recurring reports Orders tests and procedures Provides release of information Uses computer software and hardware Orders supplies

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience. Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indic! ates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed ! to perform the duties of the position; or Education. One year above high school; or Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable Certification. None required.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-3 Entry Level

Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. One year of education above High School Level.

Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

GS-4 Developmental Level

One year of experience in clerical or office work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular know! ledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position or two years of education above High School.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for GS-4 Developmental Level.

GS-5 Full Performance Level
One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or 4 years of education above High School.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities for GS-5 Full Performance Level.

1. Ability to operate computerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrieve sensitive information/ data into or from electronic medical records, scheduling systems and/or reports.

4. Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, including setting priorities and coordinating work.

5. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.

6. Ability to identify customer's concerns, perform the tasks required to resolve the issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
