Under immediate to general supervision, provides technical assistance to physicians and nurses during surgical procedures.
Essential Function/Duties:
Utilizes physician's preference cards to assist in preparing the operating room for the surgical procedure. Assists in the maintenance of preference cards. Prepares sterile field by obtaining, opening, and arranging instruments and supplies anticipated for the procedure. Assists the nur! se in correct identification of operative specimens for labora! tory analysis. Remains attentive during surgery and provides additional instruments, supplies or other items as needed. Remains attentive to sterile field and recognizes and corrects breaks in sterile technique. Participates in sponge, needle and instrument counts as directed by policy. Assists with post-operative processing of instruments and equipment. Cleans operating room areas and disposes of soiled linen. Assists in the training of surgical technicians. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:
Graduation from an accredited school/program for Surgical Technicians
OR
Six (6) months of scrub tech experience for the completion of a training program

Eligible to sit for the national exam by the Association of Surgical Technicians.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic human anatomy, surgical instrumentation, ! care and handling of surgical instrumentation, and of aseptic methods and practices. Skill in maintaining an effective working relationship with others. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served by his or her service. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status. Ability to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed by the appropriate patient age group (neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric). Must demonstrate knowledge and technical skills to function effectively as a resource to others in at least two surgical specialties. Must demonstrate an on-going flexibility towards case assignments and on-call requirements. Must have the ability to deal with stressful ! situations appropriately.
Physical Requirements (with or wi! thout accommodation):
Must be able to climb, kneel and perform duties under stressful situations. May involve the lifting and carrying of objects. Requires considerable walking, standing, pushing and pulling.
Note:
This position may be underfilled using a Surgical Tech I. The requirements include: 6 months related experience
OR
graduation from an accredited school/program for Surgical Technicians.
