Provides direct primary, preventative and therapeutic nursing care appropriate to the age of patients served.
Orders and/or performs screening and diagnostic tests and procedures such as lab studies, x-rays, electrocardiograms, audiograms and pulmonary function tests.
Formulates and implements plans of care which may involve various treatment modalities, and prescription of medications.
Performs minor surgical and invasive procedures such as suture of lacerations not involving nerves or tendons, incisions and drainage of abscesses.
Provides direct physical and psychological care in emergencies.

Basic Requirement:
Education: Degree or d! iploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
AND
Registration: Applicants must have active, current, unrestricted registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
AND
GS-9 - Two full years of progressively higher level graduate education OR a master's or equivalent degree OR One year of specialized experience defined as providing direct and comprehensive primary, preventative and therapeutic medical and nursing care to patients related to the specialty for which you are applying.
GS-11 - Three full years of progressively higher level graduate education or completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) OR One year of specialized experience defined as serving as a Nurse Practitioner providing direct and comprehensive pr! imary, preventative and therapeutic medical and nursing care to patients related to the specialty for which you are applying.
GS-12 - One year of specialized experience serving as a Nurse Practitioner providing direct and comprehensive primary, preventative and therapeutic medical and nursing care for patients related to the specialty for which you are applying as well as counseling and/or coordinating services and participating with other disciplines in reviewing the program.
SELECTIVE FACTOR: In addition to the qualification requirements for the OPM and IHS Excepted Service Qualifications described above, to be rated basically qualified for this position, candidates must possess current, valid, active, unrestricted professional nursing license as a professional nurse from any State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. New graduates must also possess this licensure as indicated with no grace period ! allowed. Applicants must have certification issued by the appropriate c! ertifying body, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), as a Nurse Practitioner. New specialty graduates (individuals who have obtained a qualifying degree within six months of their appointment) have six months from the date they enter on duty to provide evidence of certification. During this six-month period, new nurse practitioner graduates will be assigned responsibilities under closer supervision than normally expected of a certified nurse practitioner. If certification is not obtained within the six months of appointment, you will be separated from Federal service.
