Job Function

1. Chemotherapy Administration & Consultation. Ensure orders are double checked for accuracy. Reviews previous orders to identify discrepancies. Administers PO, SC injections, chemotherapy drugs, research drugs and other medications as ordered by physician. Performs chemotherapy administration per protocol with accurate timing and documentation. Consults with other medical personnel and may provide expert information about chemotherapy, side effects, etc.; provides a variety of assistance to physicians. Performs order writing/taking and patient monitoring.

2. Information Gathering, Sample Collection & Preparation. Obtains, reviews and confirms patient medical history. Performs real-time documentation of all concomitant medications and patient adverse events at each patient visit and documents relevant information in patient's electronic medical record. Reviews and grades laboratory results. Identifies, grades, documents and reports patient adverse events and serious adverse events. Consults with physician/nurse practitioner in identifying dose limiting toxicities. Performs chart preparation day before patient is scheduled to arrive. Prints all lab documents and radiologic assessments, review, grade and identify possible dose limiting toxicities. Maintain test/procedure results and protocol-specific documents in patient chart. Takes and records various readings such as heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, weight, body temperature, etc; collects samples from patients including blood, urine, etc.; prepares samples for analysis or shipment and obtains laboratory results.

3. Drug Accountability. Performs drug accountability in real time.

4. Patient Education. Provides chemotherapy and protocol-specific educational information and orientation to patients, family, etc.; answers inquiries and provides guidance as appropriate.

5. Patient Follow Up. Provides patient calendar and ensures consistency with clinic calendar, schedules patient follow-up activities related to their treatment and assists with coordination of care by obtaining referrals, etc.

6. Staff Oversight. Assist LPNs and MAs as needed to ensure protocol-required pharmacokinetic draws, electrocardiograms, vital signs, premeds, IV start and IV discontinuation are performed per protocol (as applicable).

7. Supply Maintenance. Orders and accounts for medical supply stock. Orders chemotherapy administering supplies.

8. As Needed. Performs various related duties to successfully fulfill the function of the job.

Required Education and Experience:
Associate degree in Nursing, Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred. Twelve months experience in the capacity of a chemotherapy nurse. Six months clinical research experience.

Required Certifications, Registrations, or Licenses:
These requirements may be imposed by federal, state or recognized accrediting agency as a prerequisite of employment

Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Oklahoma, BLS, and CPR certification; Chemotherapy Certification or the ability to obtain this certification within 90 days of employment in this job.
