2. JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Documentation Improvement & Compliance Specialist reviews inpatient medical records while patients are still in-house (concurrent review) for proper documentation. This review includes new admissions to the facility, as well as re-reviews every two to three days until the patients are dis-charged. The CDI-CS communicates with clinicians and physicians to ensure timely and thorough documentation and provides training and education as needed, and will perform focused reviews at the discretion of the HIM Director or PI Director.

Responsible for managing medical record requests for additional documentation (ADR) to avoid tech-nical denials. THIS PERSON will track and coordinate responses for all denial letters from govern-ment audit contractors including but not limited to Recovery Audit contractor (RAC), Medicare Admin-istrative Contractor (MAC), Comprehensive Error Rate Testing (CERT), Medicaid Integrity Contractor (MIC), and Zone Program Integrity Contractor (ZPIC) as well as 3rd party challenges for DRG and Medical Necessity.

Will serve on the Compliance Audit Response (CAR) Team, and will assist the Coding Supervisor with education, coding compliance audits and periodic coding to meet the overall needs of the coding team. Provides status updates to the Director as requested.

SCOPE OF WORK: Record reviews include Medicare and Medicaid, and those records reported for Core Measurement monitoring.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
3. QUALIFICATIONS

3.1 Graduation from accredited RHIA or RHIT program or eligible, OR 3.2 Graduation from a Registered Nursing Program. 3.3 Minimum of 3-5 years coding experience preferred. 3.4 Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) through the American Health Information Management Asso-ciation OR CCS or Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) eligible. If eligible, must pass a certification exam within 1 year of employment. 3.5 One year experience with RAC and/or other Revenue Integrity functions strongly desired. 3.6 Strong understanding of appeals processes for government contractors. 3.7 Understanding of Case Management principles is essential. 3.8 Knowledge of medical record documentation practices required. 3.9 Knowledge of medical/hospital charge processes is beneficial. 3.10 Shall maintain active registration with the American Health Information Management Associa-tion.

4. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

4.1 Able to speak clearly and distinctly with staff, physicians, patients, and other hospital employees. 4.2 Able to extensively utilize telephone, email and written communication. 4.3 Demonstrates adequate stamina to deal with stressful situations and to complete the necessary work schedule. 4.4 Able to sit/stand/walk for extended periods of time throughout the work schedule with some lifting and bending. 4.5 Demonstrates adequate vision for reading current literature and preparing written documents. Must be able to distinguish colors. 4.6 Fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination to operate business office machines. 4.7 Demonstrates adequate stamina to deal with stressful situations and complete work schedule. 4.8 On-site position.

5. JOB RELATIONSHIPS

5.1 Reports to the Coding Supervisor. 5.2 Works directly with all hospital employees, physicians, and business office personnel demon-strating team approach. 5.3 Contributes a positive attitude and department cohesiveness by working cooperatively with other staff members. 5.4 Strong customer service orientation. 5.5 Contributes a helpful attitude to physicians and other employees of the hospital.
